A pancreas transplant is a surgical procedure in which a healthy pancreas from a deceased donor is inserted into a person whose pancreas is no longer functioning properly. The pancreas is an organ located behind the lower part of the stomach. One of its main functions is the production of insulin, a hormone that regulates the absorption of sugar into cells. When the pancreas doesn't produce enough insulin, blood sugar levels can rise to unhealthy levels, leading to type 1 diabetes.
